DOE Announces $10 Million to Advance Innovative, Energy-Saving Lighting Technologies
As part of cutting energy waste and doubling energy productivity by 2030, the Energy Department today announced nearly $10 million to support research, development, and manufacturing of solid-state lighting (SSL) technologies across the country. This funding will help accelerate the development of high-quality light-emitting diode (LED) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) products with the potential to reduce lighting energy use for American families and businesses by one half and enhance U.S. global competitiveness.
Based on the Energy Department’s recent report on the adoption of LEDs, Department-supported research and development over the past 10 years has helped accelerate SSL technology deployment, yielding an energy savings of $675 million in 2012. Today, available LED technology is about 150 lumens per watt; the Energy Department’s target is 250 lumens per watt – a 75% increase. Higher performing LEDS will help further reduce overall costs and increase lighting efficiency.
Today’s funding opportunity is open to applications in the following areas:
• Core Technology Research – The Energy Department will fund projects seeking to advance applied research for technology development, with an emphasis on meeting efficacy, performance, and cost targets.
• Product Development – The Energy Department will fund projects seeking to use basic or applied research to develop or improve commercially viable SSL materials, devices, or systems.
• U.S. Manufacturing – The Energy Department will fund projects seeking to accelerate SSL technology adoption through manufacturing innovations and improvements that reduce costs and enhance quality and consistency.
The Department will make available up to $10 million for projects from industry, academia, and national labs.

LED Companies IPO to Face Temporary Decline in Stock Market
Around 50 companies are expected to be listed on the Chinese bourse by the end of January, according to a statement by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) on November 30th in regards to further promoting the reform of the IPO system. Among these companies, three LED companies are in the electronics industry IPO. The LED industry will be affected by the reopening of the IPO, where prospects will remain bearish in the short term while differentiating in the mid and long term, according to industry insiders.
Among the 83 companies that had already received preliminary approval, nine are from the electronic industry, three are LED companies. The three LED companies include Shenzhen Absen LED, MLS Lighting, and Kennede Electronics. Absen main operations are in LED display and LED lighting products. MLS Lighting mainly produces LED package and LED application products. Kennede mainly manufactures rechargeable backup lighting products and rechargeable fans.
The LED industry is anticipated to feel the effects of China’s reapprove of companies launching IPOs again. Many analysts believe that the stock market will temporarily decline but show differentiation in the mid and long-term. Package and LED application supply chains for example do not have high technology barriers, competition will therefore increase in intensity with vertically integrated companies emerging as winners. Top companies such as San’an Opto and Electech have production capacity and technology barriers and therefore will benefit in the LED industry.

Until December 2nd at 11:24, among 54 A-share listed LED companies all experienced huge plunges, while Ledman and Everfine stocks slumped to the limited legal range. Orient Crystal Optics stocks however increased 2.82 percent.

PaulBeaulieu, Vice President of Corporate Development and Power Electronics of GT Advanced Technologies shared the research results of "the Latest Technology of Reducing Production Costs of Epitaxial Wafer".
Dr. Ji Yong, president and general manager of Guizhou HaoTian Optoelectronics Technology Co.,Ltd., elaborated on the current situation and future development of sapphire industry from the aspects of LED markets and non-LED markets in his keynote speech. Dr. Ji stressed that he valued the use of technical material of sapphire substrate in LED and RFIC (radio frequency integrated circuits ) very much. As for the non-LED market, he mainly introduced the applications of sapphire in aerospace, optical equipment and other civil industries, such as a variety of instruments, Windows scanner, lens cap, cell phone screens, meter cover and bearing, etc.
Sun Jiaxin, the marketing and product manager of APT Electronics Ltd., pointed out in his keynote speech "Chip-Level LED Light Source and light Engine Technology" that the overall development patterns of the whole LED lighting market showed severe homogenized competition, which mainly laid in pathway and brands. He said that the development direction of the lighting market should focus on LCDTV backlighting and general lighting market and the enhancement of Lm/$. He stressed that the luminous efficiency of organic EL (OLED) lighting might surpass LED in the future market.
Feng Hui, senior analyst of LED industry from OFweek Industry Research Center, made the report " Research and Development Forecast Report On Chinese LED Indoor Illumination Market from 2013 to 2017", in which he pointed out that it was expected by OFweek industry research center that Chinese LED interior lighting market would maintain rapid growth in 2013 and 2014. The output value of Chinese LED interior lighting was expected to grow by 46% in 2013, to reach RMB45.6 billion and RMB64.8 billion in 2014. In his speech, Director Wen pointed out that modular product was the best solution for the impossible task that one person should master the various processes of LED from upstream to downstream, different processes and performance of various raw materials from epitaxy, chip, packaging, processing to the LED lamps lighting design. Modular products could circumvent the internal complex aspects, present functional device to the users and be user-friendly for developing new products and would become the inevitable trend of future development.
In the end, Dr. Fu Xiaohui, general manager of Huagao Intelligent Control & Power Technology Co., Ltd, made a wonderful presentation of "intelligent lighting" in his keynote speech "LED Wireless Intelligent Lighting Control Technology and Application". He said that the so-called "intelligence" was to have a sense of perception, change as the environment changes, have the interact ability to accept manual control and monitoring and have the ability of automatic control and response.
